The audio CD of this play is so unique because it is a one-woman show. However, Brenda does such an amazing job changing her voice to portray each and every character. This play has so many characters, yet it does a great job in showing how relationships change throughout a person's life, even between the same two people. The Westside is the community that Brenda comes from and just by the way the characters from the Westside versus the characters outside the Westside community talk, we can hear a difference in their personalities and behaviors. Sherry and Steven, more privileged kids who grew up outside the Westside, are poised and sound very “white,” while Kali and his friends are from the Westside and sound kind of unintelligent because they do not pronounce things as well yet there is still a lot of meaning behind their words. We also see how different characters move through different tiers in the social status throughout the play. Sherry grows up and doesn’t go to college because she gets pregnant with Smoke (a Westside boy). Her son is the mixture of two different social groups and we can see he struggles with a similar issue as Brenda. Overall, the audio CD is very unique and impressive in portraying several characters and their lives.
